Pointing at what to change

Select an element, a passage or an area on the page, then annotate it, let the agent fix it, add it to the chat, or edit the text, equation or chart data yourself.

Updated

Instead of describing where something is (“the third formula in section 2”), point at it on the page. The agent then knows exactly what you mean, and its change is limited to that place.

Select something on the page

With the Select tool (V, the default):

  • Click an element (a heading, an equation, a figure, a table) or a word to select it.
  • Drag over text to select a passage.
  • Drag from an empty spot or across a figure to select a rectangular area.

A small bar appears above the selection:

Action What it does
Annotate Write a comment and save it as an open annotation, to send later with others. See Annotations.
Let the agent fix Write what to change and start a turn right away (an annotation that is processed immediately).
Add to chat Put the selection in the chat box as a pointer, for a request that involves several places (“make these two tables match”).
Edit text Appears when the selection is text you can change directly.
Edit equation / Edit data Appear for equations and for charts drawn from a data file.

To write several annotations in a row, switch to the Annotate tool (C): every click or drag then opens the annotation box directly.

Edit text yourself

For typos and small wording changes, double-click the text (or switch to Edit text with T and click once) and type. Enter starts a new paragraph, Ctrl+Z undoes a step and Esc stops editing. Your edits are saved as a “Manual edit” version, and the agent is told about them in the next turn so it won’t change them back.

Some things can’t be edited directly: equations, code, text inside figures, and numbering, headers and footers generated by the template. Double-clicking them opens an annotation instead. Text editing isn’t available while the agent is working, or on a phone.

Edit an equation

Select a displayed equation and choose Edit equation, or double-click it. Type the equation in the box (the hint shows the syntax, with a panel of common symbols); the preview below shows it typeset in your document, with its numbering. Saving changes the document directly, without the agent, and records a version. You can also simply annotate the equation, for example “split this step into two lines”.

Edit the data behind a chart

Select a chart or table that was drawn from a CSV file and choose Edit data. Change cells, add or delete rows, and preview the chart. Saving typesets the document again and records a version you can undo. To change how the chart looks (type, axes, labels), annotate it instead.

Ask for changes in the chat

For changes that concern the whole document (“make it fit on two pages”, “translate it into Chinese”), write in the Chat tab. You can keep typing while the agent works: your messages are queued.

If the agent changes more than you asked

When a turn changes anything outside the places you pointed at, the chat says how many places were affected. View highlights them on the page, and Undo this turn reverts the whole turn.
