Creating a document

Describe the document you need, attach files, choose the document language and a template, and follow the agent's progress until the first version is delivered.

Updated

Everything starts on the New page: one box where you describe the document, plus attachments, the document language and an optional template.

Describe what you need

Write the request the way you would brief a colleague. The more of these you cover, the fewer questions the agent has to ask:

  • What it is and who reads it: “a two-page handout on logistic regression for second-year students”.
  • What it must contain: the formulas, sections, tables or figures you expect.
  • Length and constraints: “two pages”, “one page only”, “A3 with answers”.

You don’t need to say anything about fonts, colors or layout. docraft decides the form and lists the defaults it chose in the checklist, so you can correct them afterwards.

Press Generate (or Ctrl+Enter) when you’re done.

Attach files

Use Attach or drag files into the box. Each file can be up to 20 MB. Supported types:

Kind Files
Data CSV, TSV, Excel (.xlsx, read sheet by sheet), JSON
Drafts and material Text, PDF, images (PNG, JPEG, WebP), such as a photo of handwritten formulas
References .bib files (merged into the document’s reference library)
Games and music Go .sgf, chess .pgn, MusicXML (.musicxml, .xml, .mxl)

The agent reads attachments as material for this document only. Data files stay linked to the charts drawn from them, so you can later edit the numbers in a table (see Pointing at what to change).

Choose the document language

The Document language selector (English or Chinese) sets the language of the document itself. It is independent of the interface language, so you can write an English paper with the Chinese interface.

Pick a template, or let docraft choose

Leave the template on Automatic and the agent picks a suitable layout from your request. To choose one yourself:

  • Click one of the Common tasks cards (write a paper, make an exam, lab report, résumé, handout and so on). It selects the matching template and fills the box with a sample request you can edit, with a note on what to prepare.
  • Open More templates… to browse all templates by category, with a preview of each. Some have variants, such as A4 or A3 for exams and Student or Professional for APA papers.
  • While you type, Looks like: suggests templates that match your words or attachments. Click one to select it.

Some templates exist in one language only (APA and IEEE papers are English only). Choosing one switches the document language and tells you so.

You can change the layout later from Layout in the document’s toolbar, without asking the agent.

While the agent works

After you press Generate you go straight to the document. The canvas shows each stage (understanding, outlining, typesetting, checking, delivering) and the pages appear as soon as the first version compiles. If the agent needs to know something that would otherwise make the content wrong, it asks up to three questions first; answer them and it continues.

You can press Stop at any time. The turn is undone and the document goes back to how it was before.

When it’s delivered

The first version comes with a checklist in the right-hand panel: what each formula means, how the data was used, and the defaults the agent chose. Go through the items under To confirm and mark each one Correct or Wrong. When you mark one wrong, write what’s wrong; it becomes an annotation, and you can tick Fix now to send it to the agent straight away.

From there, see Pointing at what to change and Annotations.
